Unitarian Universalism: Our Shared Principles
Our congregation on the Eastern Shore of Virginia is part of a wider Unitarian Universalist tradition that honors many beliefs while centering shared values. Rather than a single creed, we are guided by principles that shape how we live, serve, and grow together.
The Seven Principles
The inherent worth and dignity of every person
Every human being has value. We strive to treat one another with respect, compassion, and care.
Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations
We work to build fair and loving relationships in our congregation and in the wider world.
Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth
Each person’s journey is unique. We support one another in exploring meaning, purpose, and truth.
A free and responsible search for truth and meaning
Questions are welcome here. We honor science, experience, reason, and wisdom from many traditions.
The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process
We make decisions together and respect individual conscience in matters of belief.
The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all
Our faith calls us beyond ourselves toward a more just and peaceful world.
Respect for the interdependent web of all existence
We recognize our deep connection to the Earth and to all life, and we seek to live with care for the planet.
What We Believe
Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religious tradition rooted in openness, love, and responsibility. People in our community may identify as Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, humanist, atheist, pagan, spiritual but not religious, or something else entirely. What unites us is not identical belief, but shared commitment to compassion, justice, and spiritual growth.
We draw wisdom from many sources, including:
Religious traditions from around the world
Science and human experience
Personal reflection and conscience
The natural world
Voices of justice and compassion throughout history
What This Looks Like in Our Community
In practice, these principles shape how we gather and how we live:
Welcoming people of all identities and backgrounds
Encouraging thoughtful conversation and exploration
Supporting one another through life’s changes
Serving the wider community with care and intention
Creating a spiritual home that is open, grounded, and hopeful
Unitarian Universalism invites you to bring your whole self, your questions, your experiences, and your hopes for a better world.
